Why is garlic mustard such a problem?● Garlic mustard’s vegetative growth starts early in the spring, outcompeting native and beneficial species that are still dormant. ● Single plants can produce seeds that will remain viable in the ground for five years or more. ● It spreads rapidly, grows tall, becomes extremely dense and in a few years it dominates the woodland understory. ● Garlic mustard releases chemicals which harm a soil fungus that hardwood trees and tree saplings need to grow and survive. ● There are no natural controls for it here in the U.S.
